What is the C.I.T. and J.C. Training Program?

The C.I.T. (Counselor-In-Training) program is designed for 16 or 17 year old campers that have an interest in learning to become camp counselors.  The C.I.T. program is a beginner training program introducing its participants to “the other side of camp”.  Perhaps, for the first time in their camping experiences, C.I.T.s discuss and learn necessary skills needed to be a camp counselor.  This can include:  emergency procedures, health care, homesickness, lesson planning and event planning.  They also have an opportunity to learn more about the vital roles the kitchen and maintenance staff play in the camp community.

The J.C. (Junior Counselor) program is a more advanced program for someone who has already completed the C.I.T. program and is ready for more challenges.  J.C.s usually have more responsibilities and higher expectations than C.I.T.s.  As well as reviewing their past skills, J.C.s focus on leadership development.  J.C.s learn to assist in teaching and developing leadership workshops as they continue to learn how to be camp counselors.

Who are C.I.T.s and J.C.s?

C.I.T.s and J.C.s are young people who have an interest in learning how to be a camp counselor, how to work with younger people in the camp setting, and how all aspects of the camp community work together to create a positive camp experience.  C.I.T.s and J.C.s are learning how to become effective leaders and role models in the camp community.  C.I.T.s and J.C.s are not staff members.  C.I.T.s must be 16 years of age by July 31st.

The Three T’s…Telephone, Transportation & Time Off

C.I.T.s  and J.C.s receive more privileges as well as responsibilities.  They may use the telephone with a calling card only on weekends for 10 minutes with permission from the director or assistant director.  C.I.T.s and J.C.s do not have time off.  They have free time each afternoon, or when given permission by the director or assistant director.  C.I.T.s and J.C.s are not permitted to use their personal cars, or loan their car to others during their stay at camp.  If they drive to camp, their keys must be turned in to the director upon arrival.
